“Why should literature be easy? Sometimes you can do what you want to do in a simple, direct way that is absolutely right. Sometimes you can’t. Reading is not a passive act. Books are not TV. Art of all kinds is an interactive challenge. The person who makes the work and the person who comes to the work both have a job to do. I am never willfully obscure, but I do ask for some effort.”

RED THREAD LEGEND SERIES by BEILI LIU

Beautiful installation inspired by the ancient chinese legend called the Red Thread. According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red thread on children who are fated to be together.

I keep about 1,000 books at home. No more. I cull every year, and I charity-shop stuff as I go along, too. I read much more than I keep. I buy a lot of poetry. I read a nonfiction book every week and usually have a “classic” and a new fiction on the go at once. I always read a poem at bedtime, and usually one before I start work each day. I read aloud to myself. This centers me in the morning and soothes me at night. I have a Kindle, but its uses are limited! Great for travel, but no substitute for the real thing. A bit like phone sex.
